The Consequences You Could Face

There are felony and misdemeanor charges in Washington state. Both can lead to fines and jail time, but felony charges are the more serious of the two. Often a charge will start out as a misdemeanor and then be elevated to a felony. DUI is a common example of this.

Misdemeanor Cases

Often regarded as minor criminal offenses, common examples of misdemeanors would be shoplifting, disorderly conduct, and possession of illegal drugs. Gross misdemeanors are more serious examples of the above, such as DUI and reckless driving. Penalties depend on circumstances but can include up to a $5,000 fine and one year in the county jail.

Felony Cases

These serious crimes include sexual assault, armed robbery, drug trafficking, assault, and homicide. Depending on circumstances, penalties can be one of the following:

  • Class A felonies: Punishable by up to life imprisonment and $50,000 in fines

  • Class B felonies: Punishable by up to 10 years in prison and $20,000 in fines

  • Class C felonies: Punishable by up to five years in prison and $10,000 in fines
